Area
Portsmouth is an historic port city on the south coast of England in Hampshire. It lies on Portsea Island, where the Solent joins the English Channel. This makes Portsmouth the UK's only island city and it is the most densely populated place in Britain after Inner London.
It has been a significant Royal Navy base for centuries and Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is home to many famous old ships including HMS Victory, the Mary Rose and HMS Warrior.
The busy commercial and car ferry port serves destinations on the continent including Bilbao, Caen, St Malo, Le Havre and the Channel Islands as well as more local destinations such as the Isle of Wight, Gosport and Hayling Island.
The retail core is served by the pedestrianised Commercial Road, Cascades Shopping Centre and the recently redeveloped Gunwharf Quays, with a wide range of general and specialist shops. Portsmouth also boasts a good selection of cafes, bars and restaurants.
Portsmouth's good road connections, puts London only 11/2 hours away via the A3(M) and the M27/A27 connects the city with Britain's motorway network. The nearest airport is in Southampton which is a 30 minute drive away on the M27. London Gatwick is approximately 75 minutes away.
